☆Princess Azula, Avatar the Last Airbender

Princess Azula~! For New York Comic Con 2012, we wanted to do an Avatar the Last Airbender group and my sister and I wanted to cosplay our favorites, who are also, coincidentally, siblings. I actually made Azula for my sister simultaneously as my Zuko so that we could match. I even made both outfits using the same red fabric. I’m super happy with how Azula and Zuko look together side by side as a set. Azula was also the first time I ever made armor! This was way back in the day before worbla, wonderflex, and other thermoplastics were really a thing, so I made this out of the good old classic method of heat-formed craft foam sheets that were strengthened with a light fabric (Lol anyone remember using this one too? Did I just age myself?). The whole things was colored using spray paint and Rub n’ Buff. I was and actually still am, considering my skill level at the time, really proud of how that set of armor turned out. My friends and I only figured out how to even affix it to my sister literally the morning of the convention, but it wound up holding up pretty well for a few cons. Since making it, there have been so many resources that have come about (including thicker foam) to make armor, that I could probably remake this set even better. Lol despite this coming out well, I to this day am not super fond of building armor and props, so I have no plans of remaking it. I’ve also learned a bunch of techniques and skills since sewing her garment as well, so I could definitely re-sew it better if I ever wanted to. After NYCC, my sister and I were going to wear Azula and Zuko again, so I made a few adjustments to the costumes and remade a couple pieces like the shoe covers and the bottom piece of Azula’s armor. Instead of stiffened craft foam, I remade it with pleather so that it would fold along with my sister when she sat down, instead of remaining a flat board on her lap lol.

Azula’s headpiece: PlatyMorph
Azula’s wig was a commission from Angie Rikku Cosplay.
Azula’s belt was a vintage belt from the 80s. The scale-mail kind of look that it has looked really cool and I thought it would work well.

Completed: May 2013 technically since I remade her shoe covers and the armor piece that comes down in front of her legs. The initial costume was more or less done by October 2012.
